Treat Your Business Like It's Your Best Client

mindset mission values systems and processes Apr 04, 2025

It's the start of a new month - and for those of us in NZ it's also the start of a new financial year (I know! April already!) This is your reminder to treat your business like it's your best client.

As a bookkeeper we are often very thorough and diligent about keeping our clients' bookkeeping up to date, but our own accounts are the builder's house that never gets done. Is this you? Or are you showing your own business the love and attention that it truly deserves?

To recap: Treating your own business like it's your best client means:

🌺 Your numbers get done first

All your invoicing is done by the 1st of the month

You send statements, follow up late payers (and you have a documented process for this

You file your own GST/VAT etc. first

You update your budget and cashflow

You prep your accounts for EOFY if it's that time of year

🌺 You analyse your numbers (in From Bookkeeper to Business Owner we use a monthly Stats dashboard that I designed)

What's your MRR (monthly recurring revenue)

 What's your gross profit margin?

What % of your income comes from your different income streams?

What's your average revenue per client

 What's your staff cost %?

Which service is making you the most profit?

Are you making money on your fixed fee clients or do you need to increase your rates?

🌺 You plan for the next month (my clients have monthly & quarterly worksheets they complete)

What went well and what didn't?

What's your focus for this month?

What specific actions do you need to take?

What else do you need to plan for this quarter?

What would you like to happen that you need to take action on to ensure that it does happen?

🌺 You make time for coaching and professional development

Where do you need accountability and who is the person to give that to you?

Do you have a CPD plan? What do you need to learn this month?

Are you feeling stuck in your business? Who do you need to talk to about that? (Talk with me)

Are there any courses or trainings or webinars that you've already bought that you can revisit?

Where do you need to get out of your comfort zone and show up so that you get the help and support you need?

Have I missed anything from this list? What else do you have on your Treat Your Business Like It's Your Best Client list? Is there something on your To Do lists for your clients that you should also be doing for yourself?
