I have a Facebook ad running at the moment. It's advertising my free resource "5 Ways to Find Your Next 5 Bookkeeping Clients, Fast!"
A fellow bookkeeper made the following comment on the post:
"Wow if you can't get clients perhaps you should rethink your career! If you are good at it word of mouth is a pretty quick process."
While it's so awesome that this has been this bookkeeper's experience, it's not everyone's experience and I would suggest it's not most bookkeepers'...
Your bookkeeping business is your business! You get to create it the way that works for you.
You are in control of the work you do and the people you work with which means that you are in control of your own destiny and you can create a business that you truly enjoy.
This might be a revelation for some of you but did you know that:
This blog has been guest written by Di Crawford-Errington who just happens to be my cousin, and is also one of the inspirations behind me starting my own bookeeping business many years ago. Di is something of an expert when it comes to NZ payroll so I asked her to write a guest post and she thankfully said yes.
Payroll in New Zealand. It could be simple… really, it could. Unfortunately, payroll being simple is all but a pipe dream as the reality is a whole different...
A big part of your bookkeeping business's online presence is social media.
Even if social media is not your thing, it’s an important strategy in your marketing plan so it really is best that you make a decent attempt at it.
Social media is one of those things that can suck you in and before you know it, you’ve clicked on link after link and now find yourself glued to the screen watching the mating habits of giraffes (#truestory).
It’s also quite a BIG beast (social media I...

Chris's background includes managing Health & Safety for large, complex construction sites as well as manufacturing and distribution sites,...
I often talk about how I sold my bookkeeping business and moved into business coaching, and that's true, I did.
But the reality is, once a bookkeeper always a bookkeeper.
These days Business Headspace has a small handful of bookkeeping clients which allows me to provide income and mentorship for a couple of other, newer bookkeepers.
And, as I love the software systems side of things, I still get to work with a large number of clients as their accounting software expert.
So even though I sold...
I was onsite with a new client last week helping them to upgrade Reckon Accounts (for those outside New Zealand and Australia, think QBO/QuickBooks).
It was not straightforward as there were multiple users accessing the file on the server, whilst also needing to integrate with Fishbowl Inventory which lived on a different computer.
Additionally, their accounts person is relatively new and has not been involved in the setup before, and as this is a new client, neither had I. I'd also...
Bookkeepers are all about impact. We want to make a difference to our clients' lives, and we certainly do just that!
We facilitate amazing change in the lives of our clients. We help small business owners to really get on top of the numbers and to understand what's going on in the business, and we often take a considerable burden and weight off our clients' shoulders.
In fact, in my experience coaching bookkeepers over the past several years, bookkeepers often value...
Let me tell you a story about a conversation I once had with a friend.
I'd just shared a post about Xero training from my business Facebook page to my personal Facebook page with a note for my friends who are business owners, reminding them that one of the things I can help with is accounting software consulting.
My friend gives me a call and says, "Oh my god, I've been looking for someone to give me some Xero training for ages, and here you've been under my nose all the time."
Something for you to think about:
"A goal is not always meant to be reached; it often serves simply as something to aim at."
- Bruce Lee
It's a different way of looking at things, especially for me as a business coach. I want my clients to reach their goals and that's what I support them to do.
Achieving our goals and dreams is fantastic. Let's be honest, it is.
But it's probably not the most rewarding thing about setting goals. In the act of striving for our goals we become changed. We grow....
